Gas Range & Microwave Dilemma

This is a view of the Rome kitchen at the model.  I read a few blogs and noticed that several people mentioned when you purchase a gas range, you cannot place the microwave above it.  I checked with the SR and PM and they acknowledged that codes are different from state to state.  As you can see placing the microwave in a different location with the cabinet set up would not work.  The structure does not allow it unless they were to raise the cabinet a few inches higher which could create me having to use a stool since I am just under 5 2 feet.   The SR suggested sitting it on the countertop which would take up more counter space that we do not have.  The PM said that he would have to go by whatever the blueprints tell him at the time of build; yet he believes it will not be a problem because he is going by the 2006 codes and other locations may be going by the 2009 codes and if he gets 2012 before our build he has to go with that change.  This answer is vague and I don't want us caught in a pickle. Any suggestions?

Here is a better view of the kitchen.  One option would be to build another set of cabinets in the location where the lamp and table are sitting.  I am sure this would be a customized request and MO MONEY!  Not good!  And, I would have to find another location to put my existing baker's rack. Ugghh!

  1. In our development, RH will wire for the microwave above a gas stove (at normal height) and then you can purchase and install it yourself later. (Lots of debate on this here: http://172waverly.blogspot.com/2012/04/dream-kitchen.html)

From your pic, wondering if you could do a hood above the range, and then the microwave mounted above the counter to either the left or right of the stove. Another option: microwave drawer.

  2. We opted for the range hood and plan to install a microwave in that location upon closing. All you need to add is a dedicated outlet in the cupboard over the range. It would be nice to know what codes they'll be using during the building process so you can make your selections accordingly. Good luck!

    1. That is a great idea. I did not even think to do that. Will you have a cabinet over it?

  3. As it stands, the PM said he has installed a few gas stoves with microwave above it (at least that is what he remembers, but not sold on his response).

  4. We are building in La Plata, Maryland. We were not able to get a gas stove under our microwave either due to code. I was with you as far as not wanting to put the microwave on the countertop. They also would not let us put the cooktop on the island, because of safety hazards (kids reaching up or sitting on the island). My mom had a home built by Lennar in Maryland and they were giving the buyers the option to place the microwave really high over the gas stove to get around the building code.

Google "hidden microwave" and look at the images that will give you some more ideas as well.

  6. In PA, Ryan will put your microwave above the gas range but it is VERY HIGH UP. I decided against it because I would have a hard time reaching it. My mom lives with us as well and she is about 5"1". There is no way she would be able to reach it without a stool. We did not get an island through Ryan.
We are going to install our own island. The reason is because I am not crazy about the shape of the gourmet island. I want a strait or T shaped island and I want to have more bar stool space. So, because we are doing this, I think I am going to out the microwave in the island. It will be low but that is better than too high.

  7. Here in SC the code hasn't changed yet and we were able to get the microwave installed over the gas range. I hope you are able to get a more clear answer.

  8. Things must have changed since May 21 in SC, because they told us that codes JUST changed and we have to have our microwave placed somewhere else too! Kind of frustrating. We still aren't confident in what we are doing yet either.
