BackSplash Discovery - Picture of Kitchen for Maria ADDED!!

Stopped by a NV Home model today and to my surprise this is what I found.  This kitchen has a subway pattern stone backsplash.  It doesn't appear as thick as our backsplash;  but they a look at both and tell me what you think is missing from our kitchen and why doesn't seem to work or does work!
Honest, feedback is appreciated!!  Thank you.

NVR Model Kitchen - Bowie, Maryland

Maria, here is a picture of the kitchen!!  I will have more pictures on Tuesday from our walkthrough!
PS. Ignore the black fridge!! We have all stainless steel appliances.  So imagine the kitchen without it.  We had to put the standard fridge in the kitchen in our region.

  1. Your back splash has more texture and a greater range of colors. I really LOVE the model back splash. Its not as textured and is more even in color, which I think is the biggest problem with yours. If what you currently have, was even toned it still might work, but the extra shades of color make it compete with the granite.

Either way I am positive you will come up with a beautiful solution!

    1. Awesome!! This is great feedback, Cami!! Every time I look at it feels like too much is going on! lol And our backsplash is chunky compared to other kitchen's backsplash. Thank you.

  2. The model backsplash is a nice compliment to the granite whereas yours seems to overpower. I hope you will get that remedied to your liking.

    1. Thanks Catherine!! It is going to have to happen sooner rather than later. Both my husband and I keep shaking our heads and the other part of me is IT CAN WORK.

  3. I think the added texture and varying colors of your backsplash are what makes it clash with the granite. I think your backsplash would look great with a solid colored countertop... just like your granite would look great with a solid colored backsplash.

The model's backsplash is smoother, the tiles/stones are relatively the same color throughout... so compliments the granite instead of competing with it.

    1. I am going to meet with the tile company to pick a different color as you suggested because it's bugging the heck out of me.

  4. I second the texture and your granites pattern is larger than the speckle on the model homes granite. I think with the right accessories you could make it work, but if you can afford to fix it you wouldn't have to try and make it work. I think the texture might make just tiling over it a but of a challenge, but a professional might be able to pull it off.

    1. I know Erin!! This is part of the problem! Do I want to pair up the right accessories or just get it handled and rip it out!!

    2. Hi Erin, I see you are building a Rome!! Wonderful! I tried to access your blog but nothing is on your blog? Are you blogging from a different blog? How can we connect to your building journey. I like the the name to Rockin and Rome-in Would love to check it out, please share url?

    3. Hi Nadase, I haven't gotten started yet. Thanks for the title suggestion. Think I will change it. My little girls first bday is this week so hopefully after the craziness I can get to blogging! It is a big decision on the backsplash. Maybe move in and give it a chance before making a choice. :)

  5. I also think the size of the tile contrasts better with the model granite. The model granite has a very tight pattern and, for lack of a better term, more marbling per inch. The pattern is also very uniform. The granite that you have has a larger pattern of marbling. I think the model works better with this tile because the large block tile contrasts with the tight marbling, whereas with yours, there doesn't seem to be a clear contrast between the two styles. I also think there is more of a color contrast with the model's marble and backsplash. And I agree with Cami, the uniformity of the model's backsplash helps.

If I were you (which I'm not, but for what its worth), I would look for a smaller tile when covering the current backsplash. I think a uniform, tight pattern would contrast well with your granite.

And who do I need to talk to about the soap dispenser? I don't see that option anywhere in my list.

    1. Great feedback, Brian!!

We had three companies to work with (the wiring, the flooring and the tiling). Not sure if it is the same in your area, but we met with the tile company to be certain that our bathroom tile and granite colors were what we were looking for and during this visit our sales representative asked me about my soap dish and towel bar options placements. Read my blog on the choices and for pictures.

    2. In my area, the flooring company and the tile company are the same people. As far as the kitchen is concerned, I opted not to go with a backsplash for now, and install one myself in the future. We plan on coordinating our kitchen paint color and the backsplash.

    3. Smart move Brian!! I just couldn't live without the backsplash! We opted to wait for the painting until after the 10 month inspection and the thought of the bare kitchen wasn't pleasing to me. So we chose to put in the backsplash. I had two choices and the other backsplash would have been definitely the greater solution. Ohh well!!

    4. Will they let you switch free if charge? If not, do it yourself after you move in. You'll have a greater selection.

    5. @ Brian, where can we find your blog? Each time I try to access your blog I get a google page? What is your url? I think you sent it before but it is not set up for easy access. You can add it as a link so people can have easy access and leave comments.

    6. @ Maria I can't imagine them being that generous! I would be SHOCKED if they did!!! Since the backsplash is my fault that is wishful thinking. They would never do it. During our initial meetings, I was told a 15 lite door was standard on our study for a Rome model which took me by surprise. I was extremely excited to have one in our new home. When the doors were being installed a standard door was installed on the study. I asked to have the door installed because that is what I was told at our initial meeting and they FLAT OUT SAID, NO!!! This really upset me because they suggested that I could not have been told this which implies I made it up. They also said the sale representative never told me this which is NOT ACCURATE nor did they offer to install the door. They asked me to supply a picture of the door in a Rome which had nothing to do with what I was told at our initial meeting which was just a wild goose chase. They told me to install the door later if I wanted it because it did not come standard on a Rome. If I had known that the door was NOT standard, I would have just ordered the door with the other upgrades and this would have saved me lots of stress from their implications not to mention that I found out the 15 lite doors are hung differently from the standard doors which means tearing out the framing or drilling new holes and patching up the existing holes to accommodate the new doors. #stillupset #disappointed

  6. Hi Nadase, When are you going to let me see your entire kitchen?!?!? At least text me a picture!!! Your backsplash has texture on the face of the tiles and around the sides. Your backsplash has multiple colors, whereas the model looks to have all the same shade of beige. Your granite is also busy, just like ours. The counter top n the first picture looks like Corian, because of the consistent pattern. I have to see an overall picture of your kitchen before I can say that the backsplash does or does not work. I want a backsplash, but I would not know where to start, because of the pattern and color in the granite, along with the cabinets. I have found that when I put anything white near my kitchen (pictures, rugs, etc.) it makes the cabinets appear yellow. I bought over $300 in hardware (that cannot be returned :-( ), because it was worked so well in the Richmond Homes model with their white cabinets. It looked completely different against our cabinets. For some reason it brought out the yellow in them, even with the hazelnut glaze. Now I am trying to decide between brushed nickel and oil rubbed bronze.

    1. Maria, I added a picture of the kitchen that gives you a better sense of what it all looks like. It's funny because our SR, the tile company sales representative and her supervisor and an Interior Designer from Arhaus all said it looks fabulous from looking at the same pictures!! #scratchingmyhead

    2. The far away picture makes the backsplash look MUCH better. I think what really throws it off looking at the whole thing is the fact that only a tile and a half fit between the countertop and the breakfast bar. From this view, I think the backsplash looks better.

    3. Thank you!!! I love it! That backsplash works. Your microwave, stainless steel refrigerator and hardware are going to pull everything together. Right now you are focusing on the backsplash, cabinets and countertop combination, because they are the only things in there right now. If you plan on putting anything, such as plants on top of the cabinets, that is going to help bring everything together. I bought a rug for the family room that had enough white in it to make the cabinets look yellow. I just bought some artwork for the walls behind the family room (near the kitchen). They are on the gold side like your backsplash and they are great with the cabinets. You'll see when you move in that white and those cabinets do not work well together. Another backsplash could end up drawing yellow out of the cabinets. Your kitchen looks great. Just wait until you move in to watch it all come together.

    4. Wow! This is awesome information. The lovely thing about design is you can make it what you want it to be and my design style can work with these colors. I would love to see how your house is coming along. When you get a chance send us an update or email me. You are right, I have been putting so much focus on the backsplash that I am agonizing over it but it's so difficult not to do it because when I walk in the kitchen it slaps me in the face because there aren't any accessories in the house. You should stop by the house to see what I mean. If you are ever in this area, feel free to stop by. We close on Friday. Whoo hoo!!

btw--I am working on my real estate license too. :)

    5. I promise to post pictures this week. I forget to take pictures every time I have it "picture" clean! I can relate to how you feel. I was stressing myself out about the kitchen or something else in the house every single day! Actually, I still doing it when it comes to decorating!!! Tell me again which neighborhood you are building in. I would love to see "The Kitchen" in person! Good luck with your classes. Let me know when you get it your real estate license and affiliate.

  7. I guess I am the only one who likes it "from a distance!" As I peek back at your blog it has started to grow on me. Yes they are fighting for attention up close but at a distance it just seems to work for me.

    1. That's what is so deceiving Crystal! From a distance it looks okay and the fight is ON depending upon the lightening.

  8. I agree with what others have posted. Yours is thicker, darker, and more textured whereas the model is lighter in color, thinner, and more smooth. I think the biggest things are the color and smoothness which makes that back splash less overpowering. I can't wait to see what you end up doing! Good luck!

    1. Elise, I can't wait either because this is going to get handled one way or another. I am not going to rest until I am satisfied! lol

  9. Yup the other one works, yours doesn't for all the reasons people above have said.

I still think tiling over it will be a very difficult challenge to get a nice finished look. How will you finish off the edges off the wall so you don't see two layers of tile?

I am just so afraid of you STILL not liking it.......my opinion still is to just start all over again. I know you hate that answer BUT it seems to be the correct solution, as pricey as it may be.

Hubby and I have been thinking of solutions and this is still his opinion. Again Nadase, just our opinion it doesn't have to be the correct one for you :)

    1. DW, I agree and I have moved on from tiling over the backsplash. It did sound like a lovely option to save money. But I want it to be done correctly if I change it out. I am still torn between keeping it and changing it. So far the feedback is to live with it for a minute or two and add my accessories which I have already toyed over numerous times and the other option that I prefer is to change it out but the the designer in me love taking risks to create the unthinkable. We shall see! You guys are awesome to help me keep in it perspective.

  10. I think that the backsplash in the model would go with your granite, I see a lot of similarity in the two colors

  11. I love this kitchen!!! I'm obsessed with doing the island in a different color than the cabinets, I will be putting in a white island in our espresso kitchen at some point after we move in along with new counter tops. The floors look AMAZING too, so rich and luxe!
