BAD TO THE BONE!

After the excitement of breaking ground and watching the framing of your house being built it appears as if nothing is happening.  Yet, to the contrary much is happening--your house is still being built.  Even when you cannot enter the house due to the rules and regulations that Ryan Homes wants the home owners to adhere to for safety reasons and beyond--again, there is still a lot of framing going on the inside of your home.  When you are finally able to walk inside your home for the very first time the excitement builds up again and shortly thereafter, AGAIN--it appears as if nothing is going on.  Let me repeat that---yet, to the contrary much is going on!  I call this the "bone of my bones" stage where all the internal aspects of your house is being put together.

The trades are showing up to get the inner workings of your house up and running.  Seems a bit boring; however, its a very crucial stage.  It's an opportunity to take plenty of pictures for the location of any wiring, blocking and your scriptures before the drywall is installed, the opportunity to double check your non standard customizations, hose bid location, flood light locations, verification of the level of padding you ordered, the color of carpet, granite and cabinets and the list goes on.  However, during this stage some of us tend to get very anxious and start waving our fingers at the SR, PM and NVR, etc and get sad, mad, bad to the bone.  We ask a lot of questions about the bones of our house.  Why does the house look so small, I could have sworn it was bigger than this?  Why does the garage look so small--let's measure it to be sure we aren't being cheated out of some square footage?  How come there is only one dedicated outlet in the garage, shouldn't there be two?  Why does the garage look so small, can we really fit two cars inside?  Why do we have different color hardware and faucet fixtures?  Why is the stain all over our brand new carpet? I thought we could not choose the same color scheme as the house to the left, right or across from us because the house across from us has the exact same color scheme--I am pissed, why didn't my SR tell me this before we selected our exterior colors?  I had no idea we had the option to our bathroom layout, now we are stuck with a wall between the shower and the tub, WTH!!  Why is the outlet for the fireplace so close?  What are these orange pipes hanging from my ceiling?  What happened to my inlet for my central vacuum?  Why did they install my outlet low when I asked for it to be mounted high?  Why do I need a sump pump?  How come I don't have a sump pump? Is my lumber going to sit out there for two weeks?  Hurricane Sandy flooded my house, is there going to be mold?  I need to get an inspector because the standing water is still in the basement?  Can you push all the utilities to the side so that I can have a decent size laundry room?  I asked for the laundry dry vent to be installed higher, but it's still low.  Why is the grading of our lot graded this way--it is definitely going to cause flooding?  Why are my windows broken, what do you plan to do about it?  Why is part of my laundry upstairs and the other part downstairs in the basement?  I paid for a well exit and it only has two steps, WTH?  We asked to have our laundry room installed upstairs, why is it in the basement?  What is this orange stuff along the perimeter of our house?  Why is my double patio door installed on the back morning room door when I asked for it to be installed on the opposite wall?  Why is my hose bid on the front porch instead of the side of the house?  How come I can't get the capped wall on my garage steps?  How come I can't lock in my rate?  It's been three days and nothing has been done to my house?  They told me I should have insulation, drywall and siding by now!!  I don't understand what is the hold up!! OMG, I think I ordered the wrong brick? OMG, the siding may turn out to be the wrong color, what if it is orange or pink?  OMG, I thought I was getting Rome elevation C but we have A?  Not sure what color of brick I ordered, but I hope I like it!  How come the windows in the loft are NOT  symmetrical?  What are these capped walls, I thought I was getting balusters?  Are the balusters going to be the same color as the floors--this isn't the color I asked for!!  OMG, there is only one outlet on the island, I need two--is it too late to add another one at the opposite side?  I wonder if my PM can install an access wall?  It's 24 hours before closing and NVR wants to verify employment, WTH?  I keep giving them more paperwork and they ask for the same thing over and over again.  It is time for closing and we are being delayed for another two weeks, WTH?  I hope our deadline for closing doesn't get pushed back because we have already given our landlord our vacate notice?  We get sad, mad, bad to the bone about our houses and I don't blame us for asking any and all of these questions.  BESIDES, we are building our dream homes and all of this matters.   So I decided to create this post just for the fun of it and you may find your questions here.   Just try not to hurt anyone in the process like Arnold did in the video.  LOL  BTW--please feel free to add more questions to this list, there are a host of others but I could be here all day trying to remember all the questions we have on our minds. HAPPY BUILDING EVERYONE!  AND CONTINUE TO ASK THOSE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS!! AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, HAVE FUN IN THE PROCESS AND EVEN ENJOY A PICNIC IN YOUR HOME LIKE ONE OF OUR FELLOW BLOGGERS HAD WITH HER DH!

  2. Nadase you are awesome, only you could come up with such a unique blog. Like A andM I also caught a few of mine in their also?

Why can't I push my house back to have a longer driveway?

Can I have a ledge instead of that silly soapdish?

Why can't I have another Elevation?

Oh crap...when the brick dries it's way too light can't it stay wet looking?

Why are my outside lights off axis?

Why don't all my tiles match in my bathroom?

Is this a standard or nonstandard request?

Why didn't tell me I could get ballisters, you never told me?

In Pennsylvania, why can't I have a microwave about my gas range stove?

I am sure if I sat here long enough I could think of many more....

This blog is so educational and also has gotten us bloggers more than RH nonbloggers...

    1. DW, you are too kind!! Every day I visit the house I find myself asking a trillion questions. There is so much that can be done and it's impossible to know all of the questions unless we ask. I value this blog community because i have learned so much and it supported us building our homes. Some things we can do now and other things will come later. This is entire process has been a learning curve--to say the least!!

  5. I really enjoy reading your blog Nadase and you definitely hit a lot of questions I would ask LOL! If it wasn't for people blogging their experiences building a lot of the things I thought would be in the home wouldn't be. I also opted for a gas stove and am concerned that I may not have it because so many others were told it can't be done. I need to talk to Ryan about this because I really want a gas stove. Thanks Nadase for your insightful blogs! -Tamica
